Thanksgiving Holiday Sparks Sense of Sharing For years, the Unlimited Five Bowling Club has made it an annual tradition of providing a local family with a full Thanksgiving dinner. This year when club members made the delivery on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, they discovered that the family was without electricity and had no way of cooking and preparing the food that was delivered. The thought of a mother and two children spending the holidays without electricity sparked club president, Evelyn Barnes to see what could be done to further assist this family. On Wednesday morning she sent an email message to many of the people that she has known for a while describing the situation with the family. To restore electricity to the residence, Duke Energy required more than $700.00. Thanks to a $700.00 contribution from Commercial Site Design, the employer of one of the Unlimited Five Bowling Club members and many contributions from individuals and area bowling clubs, electricity was restored to the residence the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The Bull City TNBA Bowling Senate, Durham Connections Bowling Club and the Unlimited Five Bowling Club were among the clubs making $100.00 contributions, while several individuals made personal contributions of $100.00 or more. Ten year old Ebony Harris sent emails to her friends describing this family’s circumstances and made a $5.00 contribution herself. When the dust had settled and all the contributions were counted, the effort had netted a total of $1764.00. After the electricity restoration, a $250 gift card from Kroger and a $250 gift card from Wal-Mart were purchased for the family and the remainder of the cash was given to the family to assist with other bills. Having been a part of this incredible effort and seeing the tremendous response that members of our local clubs and the Durham community, I hope each of you who helped to make this endeavor possible, feel the sense of pride and satisfaction that I feel for really experiencing the true spirit of giving. Thanksgiving will never be the same for many of us. The family continues to call to express their sincere appreciation. The Unlimited Five Bowling Clubs thanks you! |

Local Dignitaries Kick Off 2009 March Madness Tournament North Carolina State Employment Securities Commission Chairman, Moses Carey, Sr. and Durham Mayor William (Bill) Bell kicked off this year’s March Madness Tournament by participating in an exhibition game at Durham’s Village Lanes. The Chairman and Mayor teamed up with Bull City TNBA bowlers Brenda Bethea and Lillie Quick to compete in a Baker style match. At end of the tenth frame, the score was all tied at 139. A 9th and 10th frame roll-off provided tremendous excitement before team Bell and Bethea emerged as champs. Durham City Manager, Thomas Bonfield was also on hand for the kick-off. All three dignitaries were presented with honorary membership and a “charging bull” trophy for their participation. It became pretty obvious after a few frames that our mayor and our new President used the same bowling coaches. Take a look at some pictures from this event at the following link.
